w32 codec and flash for OpenSUSE 11.1

The restricted Multimedia formats like WMV, MPEG-4 and encrypted DVDs cannot have native support in any Linux disto. I have just installed OpenSUSE 11.1 and once again I have to manually install these codecs, and as usual the Linux community has been very helpfull.
You only need to click on a simple wizard which will guide you through the installation process of some additional multimedia codecs. Just go to http://opensuse-community.org/Multimedia. The .ymp ( a Yast Meta Package Handler file) will add the repositories and automatically install all needed codecs, painless. After that just select your prefered video player and enjoy your movies.

I did have a problem with the Flash player plugin for Firefox after installing OpenSUSE 11.1, the version downloaded directly from Adobe crashed and did not reinstall, a quick solution was to install it with zypper  $ sudo zypper install flash-player

OpenSUSE 11.1 has 3G Mobile broadband out of the box

For Linux users using 3G mobile broadband has been a bit of a pain. Well not anymore. OpenSUSE 11.1 come with 3G and Mobile broadband integrated with Gnome’s Network Manager and it’s Plug’n Play, un-Linux like painless plug’n play. I tried 2 different devices, my Hauwei 3G Dongle and my Sumsung Tocco. These are not the only improvements there’s a whole list of new and upgraded features. See the official release post from the OpenSUSE blog.

I have always been a big fan of SUSE Linux but I decided to also give Ubuntu a try, it was a good experience but it’s now time to part with Ubuntu and back to OpenSUSE.

Suse Linux 11.1 – two days to go

OpenSuse is a free Linux distribution for your PC, Laptop or server. I have used used SUSE Linux for the last 3 years, I even used it  running Open Exchange at a previous company I worked at.  SUSE Linux is developed by Novell and is a very robust distro and their developers have strong involvement in the Linux and Open Source community, something that Ubuntu lacks. Ubuntu is a good OS but the business backing of the company makes it difficult for their developers to get stuck in helping develop for the community. Anyway leaving the grey area…..
