According to numbers from StatusCounter,  the iPad has bypassed Linux in terms of web surfing in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and The Netherlands.  As a Linux enthusiast I find it disturbing but at the same time it makes complete sense.

The OS battle is between Windows, Apple and Linux. Windows and Apple dominate but Apple has a very strong grip in the market, due to its great fan/user base.

I would say, with no fear of being wrong, that most users browsing the web with an iPad, do also from their Mac[add here you preference] computer. Without playing down the quality of the product, I believe the iPad is basically taking a piggy-back ride.

The “There’s an App for that” claim for the iPhone makes me cringe. How many of the Apps we have in our mobile devices do we actually use?

I am not  a good exmaple to start with as I am not an early adopter of anything technical and I tend to stay away from what the crowd goes for, so any Apple device is a no go area for me. I have though not too long ago acquired an Android powered device which I really like. I have browsed the Android App store up and down and tested a number of Apps, some cool stuff but I only keep the ones I actually use.

Here is my humble short list of favourites

• Gmail App (native to Android)

• Peep (for Twitter)
• Facebook (on the mobile browser)
• Orkut (on the mobile browser)
• Google Maps (use it a lot in conjunction with GPS)
• Google Calendar sync (native to Android)
• Music player (native to Android)
• File Browser
• gStrings (Guitar tuner)
• Youtube (native to Android)
• Droid Locator
• A couple of games
• Daily Sudoku (Embarrassing I know, but great for calming my ADHD)

According to the BBC technology website, Apple claims to have fixed a hole in iTunes that allowed it to sync non-Apple devices. Interesting that this comes out as a lot of iPhone competitors are on the market and some of them like the Palm Tre do sync with the iTunes library.  Thanks to Apple if you live in a mixed enviroment you are now stuck.  Isn’t this what people would call the “drug dealer’s technique”? You give them access to it, get them hooked and make them buy more and more. I have always been unimpressed with Apple’s rip-off marketing strategy and even more with the cultish behaviour of its users but this is a new low.

Apple tried to keep cool about it with this (lame) statement…

“Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players” and warned that “newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality” with them.”  extracted

Maybe it’s time to switch to something like Song Bird, the open source competitor to the iTunes that syncs with most devices, including iPods.

I was reading this article on ZDNET.com “Is Mac still the safer bet?” by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes. This is a question that I have been asked many times also, “Is Mac safer than windows?” Although many times it sounded more like an affirmation than a question.

I wouldn’t say it’s safer, it’s just not as targeted. Once Mac becomes a target, the cyber criminals will have a lot of fun because of the lack of attention to security Mac users have. To switch platform with the sole reason of not having to think about security is very lame.

The Microsoft operating system is targeted  for its many vulnerabilities including the end users, who have now started to take security really seriously. Mac users have to step up on their care for security. Most problems I find with Mac users are:

•  Very simple (Unsecure) passwords
•  Blind trust in any program that is available for Macs (because its safe right!)
•  Addiction to desktop gadgets (because its safe right!)
•  Keychain unconditional love – store all and any passwords (this combined with my first point can be a disaster)
•  Will join any wireless network availabe (I am safe it’s a Mac)
•  Last but not least… they are  annoying. ;)

I do not intend to have a go at Apple/Mac and its users, but the lack of security awareness I have seen , specially the new ones recently switched from Windows, is scary. If a well developed targeted malware or virus were to be released now it would be a global disaster.

So my answer to the question is: “The operating system hasn’t been target untill then no one will know how much safer it is. Mac users brace yourselves!”

Apple has released the  SMC and EFI firmware updates for the MacBook Pros (late 2008 only) and Mac Book Airs. The updates are only for the new Late 2008 MacBooks – not for all MacBooks. If you need the updates, they will show up in Software Update.

SMC – System Management Controller for Intel- based computers. It controls the power functions on your logic-board.

EFI – Extensible Firmware Interface consists of an on-board flash EEPROM that includes the
hardware-specific code and tables needed to start up the computer, load
an operating system, and provide common hardware access services.
