This is probably my shortest post, but I hope it’s as helpful to others as it will be for me as I need to remember how to auto start a program in Gnome 3.

1. press: alt + F2
2. Type: gnome-session-properties
3. Click on “+ Add”
4. Name: Application Name
5. Command: Application command e.g: skype
6. Click “+ Add” and you are done.

Open SUSE 12.1 comes with the completely redesigned Gnome 3 desktop, which in my opinion is the best one so far. I have been using Gnome for a few years now and even though I like the clean design of Gnome 3, I still like to have some desktop icons. To Show your Desktop icons on Open SUSE 12.1 is a very simple procedure,

1. Go to Applications > Advanced Settings
2. Select Desktop
3. Set option “Have file manager handle the desktop” to ON

For other Versions of Linux you may need to install dbconf

I have been using Spotify on Linux for quite a while now, under Wine. Suddenly it decided not to work a any more.  I was getting the following error when trying to run the new 0.6.2 version.  “The program Spotify.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.”

Trying to run it from the command line showed me yet another error message: “wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0×00000068 at address 0x7bc368b5 (thread 0042), starting debugger…”

UPDATE: Please first try the WinHTTP.dll fix posted by Nick in the comments section.

My simple solution: After searching in various forums and blogs and trying a myriad of  “fixes” that took me nowhere. The simplest answer I found was to remove the Spotify app from Facebook. I can now listen to my Spotify  play lists on my Open SUSE Linux. It does mean that you will be without the Facebook integration, which for me is not a big deal.

To delete Spotify from your Facebook account go to Privacy Setting >> Apps and Websites >> edit (Spotify) >> remove application

Spotify does have a Linux version of its software, which is currently in preview version and only available for Debian/Ubuntu  paid subscribers.  On their website they said: “As we haven’t found a reliable way to display ads yet, this version (Linux Preview) is only available to Spotify Premium and Unlimited subscribers. “  Fair enough I would say…

According to numbers from StatusCounter,  the iPad has bypassed Linux in terms of web surfing in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and The Netherlands.  As a Linux enthusiast I find it disturbing but at the same time it makes complete sense.

The OS battle is between Windows, Apple and Linux. Windows and Apple dominate but Apple has a very strong grip in the market, due to its great fan/user base.

I would say, with no fear of being wrong, that most users browsing the web with an iPad, do also from their Mac[add here you preference] computer. Without playing down the quality of the product, I believe the iPad is basically taking a piggy-back ride.

Has anyone be experiencing problems with USB mobile broadband Dongles on OpenSuse 11.3? Once the device (Huawei E156) is inserted OpenSuse recognises it automatically but after a few minutes it drops the connection and the device is not able to connect again. 

The Network Manager drops the device from the list and then re-inserts it, but for some reason it disables the Mobile Broadband. Removing and re-inserting the device dos not resolve the issue. I used this device very often on OpenSuse 11.2 without any problem. 

Is anyone having a a similar problem? Does anyone have the solution?

As a Linux user and Open Source enthusiast I always want to see people moving away from the proprietary stuff and into the Open Source world, but sometimes it’s easier to keep them where they are (stuck to Windows), specially when it comes to gaming. I am not a gamer, and would rather spend my time on other more fulfilling tasks like testing a ClearOS installation, but when it comes to helping people migrate from Windows to Linux, there’s always that dreaded question  “Will my games work?”  The answer could easily be “yes very well, better than before!”  but in reality a majority of the games won’t. Why? The proprietary monster that is Microsoft has allured programmers, graphic card manufacturers and the common citizen into the idea that DirectX is the best, and it could not e further from the truth. While DirectX only runs on Windows, OpenGL offers equal or better results and runs on every platform. 

But don’t let me talk to you about this, as I said I am not a gamer, let those who know what they are talking about tell you. I am currently working on a project to offer an Open Source Linux based Network Tool pre-installed in a very small custom built computer (like the fit-pc or linutop), I want to avoid having a CD drive and want to keep it simple for the client to reinstall the system if needed.  I decided to create a bootable USB Flash Drive to accompany the system, while looking around I found this great application called UNetbootin that will create a bootable USB Drive from any Linux OS ISO image. You can create the bootable USB drive from either a Linux or Windows desktop.

UNetbootin has presets for most major Linux distros and can be also used to load various other systems:

• Parted Magic, a partition manager that can resize, repair, backup, and restore partitions.
• SystemRescueCD, a system repair, backup and recovery tool.
• Super Grub Disk, a boot utility that can restore and repair overwritten and misconfigured GRUB installs or directly boot various operating systems
• Dr.Web Antivirus, F-Secure Rescue CD, and Kaspersky Rescue Disk, which remove malware from Windows installs.
• Backtrack, a utility used for network analysis and penetration testing.
• Ophcrack, a utility which can recover Windows passwords.
• NTPasswd, a utility which can reset Windows passwords and edit the registry.
• Gujin, a graphical bootloader that can also be used to boot various operating systems and media.
• Smart Boot Manager (SBM), which can boot off CD-ROM and floppy drives on computers with a faulty BIOS.
• FreeDOS, which can run BIOS flash and other legacy DOS utilities.

On June 18th 2009 The OpenSuse Project announced that its development factory has been made more accessible to package contributors.  Joe Brockmeier’s post at opensuseNews states…

 ”we’re making it easier for contributors to take responsibility for packages and to contribute directly to openSUSE. This means contributors will be able to be directly responsible for packages, without having to go through a Novell employee to make changes.“

Tux (the Linux Penguin) is going on vacation for a while to give TUZ (a Tasmanian devil wearing a penguin mask) a season as the official Linux Kernel Mascot. 

It turns out that Tasmanian devils are currently endangered by an especially nasty form of communicable cancer. The lca2009 organizers decided to dedicate the event’s traditional charity auction to the cause of helping research into this disease. This auction surpassed everybody’s expectations, raising some AU$40,000 for the campaign to save the devil.
In the process, it also treated attendees to the sight of Linus Torvalds shaving Bdale Garbee’s beard.

After returning home, Linus decided to help raise awareness of the Tasmanian devil’s plight by bringing in Tuz for a kernel cycle. (extracted from the linux Foundation)

According to the Windows Team Blog the sales of netbooks with Windows has gone from under 10% of unit sales during the first half of 2008 to 96% as of February 2009.   I wonder why that is……

The Windows team Blog arrogantly says : “When they realize their Linux-based netbook PC doesn’t deliver that same quality of experience, they get frustrated and take it back.”

I would question the term “same quality of experience”, because Linux does not strive to give the user same quality of experience as Windows, a Linux user has a completely different experience, and personally it’s a better one, but it’s like switching religion, … “leave your old ways behind” which is exactly what every new Mac User does (this is the only good thing I have to say about them).

Most of the returned Netbooks in 2008 had Linux installed. I don’t think it’s a case of dissatisfaction it’s a case of  “I didn’t research before buying it and just went for the cheapest”. Switching Operating Systems is a process, is a migration. It’s naive to think that you can just jump from one to the other and that’s it, you cannot just assume that the other OS will have the “you are dumb and I will do everything for you” wizards Windows has.

Windows claims to “just work with peoples stuff”

• Windows supports nearly 3,000 printers, more than 700 digital cameras, more than 240 webcams and more than 180 digital video cameras.
• Windows supports the broadest array of PC applications and games.

Well this is down to the manufacturers really. Remember the issue with periferals and Vista? I remember having countless users tell me that their practically new printers would not work with Vista.

Mobile broadband on Linux

I think a big difficulty for Linux users has been with Mobile Broadband, most 3G Mobile Broadband devices will work with Linux but not “out of the box”, and that has frustrated many users. By the ammount of hits I have had on my post about the Huawei E156g I can tell this is a big issue, although the solution is very easy.

I have used Linux for the last 8 years and in my opinion Linux is as good OS as (if not better than) those of Microsoft or Apple. I know what I want a computer to do and I prefer having to go out of my way to make sure it does it the way I want it than having the computer tell me what I need and how I need to do things. My advice for anyone thinking of buying a Netbook or any computer with Linux is:

1. Try it first. Use a live CD on your current machine or use a Virtual Machine.
2. Try different distributions like OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Mandriva, PSLinuxOS
3. Search for specific applications for your specific needs
4. Test your periferals

The openSUSE Project and the Linux Foundation today jointly announced that the openSUSE Build Service will be added to the Linux Developer Network (LDN).

The openSUSE® Build Service is the only development platform that enables developers to package software for all major Linux* distributions, and is used to provide transparent infrastructure for the creation of the entire openSUSE distribution. Additionally, the openSUSE Project, a Novell sponsored and community-supported open source project, announced a new release of the openSUSE Build Service with support for compiling for the ARM platform.

OpenSuse in currently on version 11.1, this release includes a ton of new features and improvements, an improved desktop experience with GNOME 2.24 and KDE 4.1.3, OpenOffice.org 3.0, YaST improvements, updated Linux kernel, and much more.

With the arrival of the NetBooks what has happend with the likes of Linutop the Linux based ready-to-use small desktop computer.

Linutop’s operating system is stored on an internal flash memory and it comes with free standard ready-to-use Linux software: Firefox, Open Office, VLC Media player… and can be easily customized with additional software.

With no moving parts, Linutop offers a completely silent (0 dB), energy-efficient operation in an extremely small package.

There are many uses for such a small computer: Internet Kiosk, Office Desktop, Library Desktop, Schools, elevators, sales point, vending machines, halls, presentation.

I am thinking of other applications for this tiny PC:

• in car entertainment system, attached to a small usb touchscreen
• a small web server to serve local applications
• a local proxy server with Squid and squidGuard Content Filtre
• a local Nagios Monitoring System
• a backup system or file server attached to external Storage devices
• Local Network Firewall
• and the list goes on

Basically a few of these little beasts can run a whole business.
