UK Plans to monitor ALL internet usage

The UK government dropped the case for a single government-run database but has asked communications firms to record all internet activity and make it available to security services upon request.

According to the BBC technology website, the new system would track all e-mails, phone calls and internet use, including visits to social network sites. Communication service providers (CSPs) will be asked to record internet contacts between people, but not the content, similar to the existing arrangements to log telephone contacts.

Based on this deal, ISPs will now be able to store more details about user’s activities and facilitate the use of the controversial behavioural marketing strategy like Phorm. How close will this gathering of data be monitored? How can we know for sure that our online behaviour is not going to be sold to third parties for marketing (SPAM) purposes? What about personal privacy?

The Home Office has released the Official Data Consultation document with guidances and regulations.

Cheaper Phone Calls with Vonage (VOIP)

Vonage is a low-cost phone company. They offer unlimited‡ phone calls around the world, all for a set monthly fee.

Instead of using a physical landline , Vonage works by using your existing broadband connection (without slowing it down). That’s why it’s so much cheaper.

You use Vonage just like you use the phone service you’ve got now. Once you’re set up, you carry on making and receiving calls just like you did before. Just pick up the phone, no headsets required, wait for the dialling tone, and then punch in the number. The only difference you’ll see will be in your bills, which will be much lower.

Sun and Oracle today announced a definitive agreement for Oracle to acquire Sun for $9.50 per share in cash. The Sun Board of Directors has unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer. This news comes as a shock after IBM recently failed to reach an agreement with Sun Microsystems.

What’s the future of MySQL now that the world’s largest commercial proprietary database vendor will soon be owning the world’s largest open source database project?

With the acquisition due to take place this summer, Oracle will own not just MySQL but also the Java Platform, Open Office, VirtualBox, Open Solaris … what will happen with these applications, specially OpenOffice?
